Beleaf Medford Set to Open as Brookhaven’s First Cannabis Dispensary This Winter

Brookhaven Town will soon welcome its first cannabis dispensary after town officials approved a special permit and zoning variance for Beleaf Medford. The store is expected to open in January or February 2025 at 262 Middle Island Road in Medford. Co-owners Joseph Martin and Michael Reda are currently applying for a building permit, and this new location will join their other stores in Brooklyn and Riverhead.

The site is zoned for industrial and as part of the three-year special permit there is a condition that there will be no onsite cannabis smoking.

Beleaf Medford is expected to employ between 20 and 40 people and will likely operate from 10 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday, with shorter hours on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. To ensure compliance with regulations, a security guard will check IDs at the entrance to prevent anyone under 21 from entering, and the building will be monitored by security cameras and lights. Martin emphasized the company’s commitment to operating responsibly and being a positive addition to the community.

Beleaf Medford will become one of the few legal marijuana dispensaries on Long Island, along with others in Farmingdale and two on the Native American Indian reservations in Southampton and Mastic. Newsday provides further coverage on the approval here, while more details about the zoning board’s decision are available in Suffolk County News here.
