McDonald’s To Phase Out Self-Serve Soda Stations

McDonald’s self service soda machines are the latest victim of the pandemic. Fewer people are using their dining rooms opting for drive-thru or digital order that they pick up at stores, meaning the soda fountains that people have come to know and love are going to be a thing of the past. It’s a change that has been reported across the restaurant industry and over the last few years many companies have evolved to adapt to the new shift in consumer behavior.

In their latest earnings report, McDonald’s said that digital orders in their top six markets were over $8 billion for the second quarter of 2023, representing nearly 40% sales.

The company confirmed that they are phasing out fountain soda machines in a statement reported by Business Insider.

“McDonald’s will be transitioning away from self-serve beverage stations in dining rooms across the U.S. by 2032,” the company said. “This change is intended to create a consistent experience for both customers and crew across all ordering points, whether that’s McDelivery, the app, kiosk, drive-thru or in-restaurant.”
