The Future of Cocktails? A New Japanese Highball Arrives at Nomiya Sushi in Garden City That’s Refreshing and Delicious
Nomiya Sushi & Izakaya owner Ajay Chawla proudly hands us a tantalizing new cocktail that his restaurant is making. It’s bubbly, light and it might be the perfect summer drink.
“This is not something every bar is going to get,” he says. “They’re not giving it away for free.”

Nomiya owner Ajay Chawla pouring a Suntory Highball Whiskey cocktail at his restaurant.
Chawla is referring to a beautiful machine bolted to the end of his bar inside his sushi restaurant at Roosevelt Field Mall. Manufactured by Suntory, a Japanese whiskey-maker, the highball machine mixes up one of the most refreshing cocktails you will taste this side of Citi Field. That’s because there is only one of its kind on Long Island right now. Citi Field has three of the coveted machines but you’ll have to travel to Queens to see the Mets play to get one.
This new drink delivers a unique experience that’s hard to come by, and just may be your new warm-weather cocktail.
Securing the highball machine was no easy feat. It took Chawla about a year of perseverance to acquire the machine, which Suntory does not readily supply. The machine itself is a beauty of industrial design, like something you’d find in a Sharper Image catalog or if Tesla made barware.

Nomiya Station offers a selection of highballs crafted by Japanese technology, providing super chilled whiskey and super carbonated soda. These highballs are made with Suntory Whisky Toki, a clear gold Japanese blended whisky. Toki, meaning “time” in Japanese, is a blend of Chita grain whisky, Hakushu malt whisky, and Yamazaki malt, created by fifth-generation chief blender Shinji Fukuyo.
Refreshing and versatile, Nomiya customers can enjoy a variety of highballs, including the Whiskey Highball, a classic blend of whiskey and soda water; Vodka and Gin Highballs, Fruit Infusions, lychee in vodka, Japanese yuzu gin, and tequila with lemon and lime.
Each highball is priced at $15 per glass and pairs exceptionally well with sushi, offering a delightful complement to your meal. Additionally, Nomiya Station plans to introduce flights soon, including gin, vodka, and highball whiskey flights.
You don’t have to be your typical whiskey aficionado to enjoy the Suntory highball cocktail. If you’re looking for a refreshing new drink to try, Nomiya Station offers a unique experience you won’t find elsewhere on Long Island. This just might be the future of cocktails.
